ABOUT KARACHIAt over 12 million citizens, Karachi, Pakistan is the planet's second most populace city ( Including the aggregate metropolitan area.) Pakistan's most crowded conurbation is also the country's biggest port along the Arabian Sea. An ethnically diverse capital of the Sindh province,Karachi is nicknamed 'The City of lights," unlike Pyonyang, nicknamed the "City of One Light." The bustling port brings an atmosphere of transit, apropos given the financial and commercial nature of Karachi. Historically, home to a variety of peoples, the architectural stamp of the British Raj remain strongly imprinted. A largely Muslim population, remnants of the city's international influences can be seen reflected in the well appointed Saint Patrick's Cathedral, open since 1881. Though externally less ornate than Europe's vaunted cathedrals, the interior space of Karachi's cathedral is impressively gilded. A coastal city, Karachi enjoys a mild climate, the monsoon season is limited to the mid-to-late summer. The beaches that surround the city are pleasant, and while they won't likely usurp Malibu as the platonic ideal of playas everywhere, they are a nice respite from the crowded streets. |
